Business steps in: Companies are also acknowledging the potential of plasma.
Adam Schechter, CEO of testing firm LabCorp, said at the Red Cross’s round table that his company would offer free antibody testing through medical offices to increase blood plasma donation. “LabCorp is currently working with public health authorities and the community of providers on the details of this three-month program and will provide further information in the near future,” the company said in a statement.
Paul Perreault, CEO of CSL Limited, said his company and the NIH are proposing a clinical trial to test a treatment known as hyperimmune globulin, which is derived from convalescent plasma. The company is registering patients for the study next month. If the treatment proves effective, the CSL could apply to the FDA by the end of this year, Perreault said.
What̵7;s next?: Hahn said the agency is examining data behind the effectiveness of recovering plasma. Clinical trials are underway and there may soon be an FDA emergency permit to expand plasma use.
