A fatal weekend of gun violence in Chicago claimed injuries to two police officers early Sunday morning, a spokesman for the police department confirmed.
Both officers were hospitalized, but their health was not immediately known, a Twitter spokesman said.
Between Friday night and Saturday afternoon, at least 5 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in city shootings.
A 19-year-old man was fatally shot dead on Friday by a man who got out of his SUV and hit him in the chest and stomach. He was pronounced dead in hospital, WMAQ-TV reported in Chicago.
Within 20 minutes, the 39-year-old was killed while driving while sitting on the porch with two others. He was hit several times in the legs and pronounced dead in the hospital.

The 66-year-old woman, who was also on the porch, was in critical condition after being hit in the shoulder.
About an hour later, the 21-year-old was killed in a separate shooting while coming out of a mini-mart with a gas station. He was pronounced dead in hospital after several interventions.
A few minutes later, the woman was shot in the stomach and killed by an unknown suspect while walking down the sidewalk with a 31-year-old woman. The 31-year-old was taken to hospital in a fair condition after being hit in the thigh.
According to WLS-TV in Chicago, a 40-year-old man was also fatally shot after 15:00 on Saturday.
According to the WMAQ, they were not arrested.
Four others were shot dead in the city on Thursday, FOX 32 said.
“People … are there in despair,” Fox Nation host Lawrence Jones said earlier this month, adding that no one seems to care about the ongoing violence, which has also recently killed several young children.
