Some of Joe Biden̵7;s allies are campaigning behind the scenes to prevent Senator Kamal Harris, D-Calif, from becoming vice president.
This disgruntled group of at least a dozen Biden supporters, including some of its best donors, started against Harris just a month ago, just weeks before the expected decision, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. Many who spoke to CNBC declined to be named because the effort was made privately.
In some cases, her enemies turned directly to members of Biden’s VP search committee led by former Sen. Chris Dodd, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del and Cynthia Hogan, who had previously advised the presumed Democratic candidate when he was Vice President of President Barack Obama.
While none of these actions mean that Biden will remove Harris from the list, the movement is looking at the efforts it is making to derail its candidacy.
Some remain hot from her attacks on Biden during primary debates last year, saying they question her loyalty to the former vice president. Others say she is too ambitious and will focus solely on becoming herself president. Many of these Biden collaborators pushed for alternatives to Harris, such as Rep Val Valings, D-Fla, Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif, former US Ambassador Susan Rice and Senator Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill.
Earlier this year, a group of donors tried a similar tactic against Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, who openly announced that she would accept the offer for Biden’s vice president.
Representatives of Biden and Harris did not return a request for comments.
Biden said at a news conference on Tuesday that he would make the final decision next week. At the time of his remarks, he held a set of remarks that seemed to guarantee Harris. The document was captured in a photo taken by the Associated Press. His apparent decision to become Harris came after Politico described in detail some of the concerns expressed by Biden’s supporters that she had become vice president, including Dodd himself, who allegedly told the donor that he was taken aback when he appeared to have no regrets from the attack on Biden’s previous position on the integrated bus at last year’s debate.
John Morgan, a businessman and binder in Florida, admitted to CNBC that he had privately expressed his concern about Harris to those who were trying to guide Biden on his possible choice.
“She would run for president on the day of the inauguration,” Morgan said on Wednesday. “For me, loyalty and friendship should mean something. But as Bill Clinton once told me, the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease is ambition, “he added, noting that he was in favor of Demings.
“I think a lot of people closest to Joe are pushing Kamala, including me,” cottage businessman Biden told CNBC. “I don’t like it and I don’t like the way she ran the campaign. She doesn’t seem loyal and very opportunistic at all. ”
A California political agent who previously raised money for Harris’ presidential campaign explained that the move to increase her chances for her vice president was even taken by Biden’s allies in her home state.
“A lot of people here will enjoy the chance to take a pot,” the person said.
But despite efforts, Harris still appears to be among the top job seekers.
Predict It, a predictive betting site that tracks political events, shows Harris ahead of all other VP elections.
In Biden’s remarks, which seem to be her defense, he described Harris as “talented”, “a great help to the campaign” and that “he has great respect for her.”
Harris was also a key voice in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
In a recent op-ed released in the USA Today, Harris criticized President Donald Trump and Republicans for their reaction to Covid-19.
“People across the country are asking the president and his Republican supporters in Congress to approach these crises with the seriousness they deserve, to recognize their evil actions and to work on behalf of the people who sent them to Washington,” she said. “If they can’t, it’s time for them to move out and let the real leaders lead.”
Trump himself told reporters on Wednesday that he believed Harris would be a “great choice” for Biden’s running friend.
The remarks by former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, also refer to Sen. Kamala Harris of D-Calif., Among other things, during a campaign campaign at the William “Hicks” Community Center in Anderson, Wilmington, Dublin, Tuesday, July. 28, 2020.
