A popular smartphone maker, Xiaomi, has unveiled a new version of its flagship Mi 10 Ultra phone with an invisible selfie camera under the screen, and the phone could be ready for release early next year.

In the video tweeted by Perennial Leaker Ice universeXiaomi presents an unreleased smartphone along with the current model, which is equipped with a punch-style camera in the upper left corner of the display.

Maintaining the quality of the camera and display are two huge challenges when developing a camera under the screen. However, apart from the obvious lack of perforations in the new model, there seems to be little visible difference between the two displays, except for small variations in brightness and color temperature. The video also makes it impossible to judge the quality of the new camera. A demonstration selfie is taken and the results look good, but it is not directly compared with the current version of the punch hole.

From what we see, however, the results look promising for anyone waiting to try out the new technology, even though it remains to be seen how the new model will cope in the real world.

Xiaomi currently owns a 10% share of the global smartphone market Mobile device monitoringand its Mi 10 Ultra is at the top of the Dxomark camera rankings at the time of writing.

For now, all eyes will be on the Chinese manufacturer ZTE, which on September 1 announced plans to launch the world’s first smartphone with a camera under the screen. These significant advances come at a time when Samsung has just revealed its own camera under the screen and Apple continues to introduce a big “notch” in its latest iPhones. So will the quality be good enough? We’ll find out very soon.
