Lee Teng-hui, who accompanied Taiwan on its path to democracy, died at the age of 97



Lee Teng-hui, who was the first original Taiwanese president to control the island’s transition to democracy, became its first popularly elected leader and fought for a sense of Taiwanese identity separate from mainland China. He was 97 years old.
