Just yesterday, Google began teasing the mid-range Pixe 4a pixel along with the date of August 3rd. Today, however, we have the first look at the mid-range Pixel phone for 2021 – “Pixel 5a” in the Android Open Source Project.
Earlier this month, we’re pretty sure we’ll know three Google Pixel phones by 2020 – the middle pixel 4a, the top middle pixel 4a (5G) and the premium pixel 5. Our Stephen Hall has already explained in detail what to expect from these three phones.
With these mysteries more or less solved, our attention has already turned to the 1920s produced by Google. With the success of Pixel 3a and the amount of excitement surrounding the very late Pixel 4a, it would come as no surprise that Google would continue to offer mid-range phones for the foreseeable future.
Today, however, we have concrete evidence that Google is actually working on a middle-class phone called “Pixel 5a”; in 2021. This is due to a code change in the Android Open Source project, where the developer directly mentions basically the entire Google Pixel phone set and which version of Android it has launched or will begin.
As our Dylan Roussel noticed, in the list of devices we see the three upcoming Pixel phones we already knew about – Pixel 4a, 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 – as well as a direct mention of Pixel “5a. “
So what will we learn from this introductory mention? First, we now know that Google Pixel 5a is evolving. Second, we can guess that just like Pixel 3a and 4a, Pixel 5a will be released in the middle of the year, as it will be on Android 11 (R) instead of Android 12 next year.
What we don’t know is what hardware would work on this Pixel 5a device. This type of information does not usually appear in the Android Open Source Project until the device is released. In any case, it’s exciting to have confirmation that Google will continue to release quality mid-range phones for the foreseeable future.
