The 140-foot mural is on the side of a building in downtown Spokane, Washington – sponsored in part by Terrain, a local arts non-profit organization. The field, along with digital advertising agencies 14Four and Seven2, hired 16 artists to decorate and paint each letter in Black Lives Matter, according to affiliate CNN KXLY.
But for some, it was offensive. The murals, completed less than two weeks ago, were vandalized on Wednesday.
However, the community does not allow a negative reaction to hinder efforts. The mural restoration fundraiser has already earned more than $ 10,000.
“In order for this project to take place, it took dozens of people who work with love, and only one or two hated each other,”
; Terrain said in a statement posted on Facebook. “We transcend them, but we cannot be silent or silent.”
Artist Nicholas Sironka designed and painted the letter “A” in a “black” mural, a letter that took on an onslaught of white. He was not surprised that the mural was vandalized, he told CNN.
“I just feel that all black life matter is more important to me now, unity of purpose. Everyone is united for one purpose, and that is to eliminate inequality and injustice, and all these things can be put together, “he said.
Kiantha Duncan, vice president of the NAKP’s Spokane chapter, said she had a visible reaction to the photo display.
“It’s very scary,” Duncan told the local KHQ news station. “When the words ‘Black Lives Matter’ are enough to upset the people of the city so badly that they not only protested against him, but also destroyed the very words on the side of the building.”
Sgt. Terry Preuninger, a Spokane police spokesman, told the local branch. A spokesman for the inspection department was notified of the vandalism through the media, but did not confirm whether a formal complaint had been lodged.
This is not the only BLM mural that has been devalued in recent weeks. In Spokane, George Floyd’s mural was enchanted in white, although it was restored.
In Manhattan, the Black Lives Matter mural in front of Trump Tower was damaged four times, despite being completed on July 9.
