Two Indian schoolgirls have discovered an asteroid that is slowly moving its orbit and moving toward Earth.
Radhika Lakhani and Vaidehi Vekariya, both 10th graders, were working on a school project when they discovered an asteroid called HLV2514.
Girls from the city of Surat in the western Indian state of Gujarat participated in the Space India project and NASA, which allows students to analyze images taken with binoculars located at the University of Hawaii.
Aakash Dwivedi, an educator and astronomer in space India, told CNN that students across India have learned how to observe celestial bodies using software that analyzes images collected by NAS Star PAN Star. The students then looked for moving objects in the pictures.
Dwivedi explained that the project aims to involve and educate students in science and astronomy.
“We started the project in June and a few weeks ago we sent the analysis back to NASA. On July 23, they sent us an e-mail confirming that we had identified an object near the Earth, “informed CNN Vekariya, who is 15 years old.
Dwivedi explained that the asteroid is currently near the orbit of Mars – but in 1 million years it will change its orbit and approach Earth, even though it will still be more than ten times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
“NASA takes asteroids very seriously. Because this asteroid is changing its orbit, it has become a novelty, “said Dwivedi.
Asteroids, also known as smaller planets, are small rock objects that orbit the Sun.
Vekariya said the students could not celebrate the discovery because of the pandemic, but added: “It was a dream. I want to become an astronaut. “
She said: “It’s such a huge topic. There is no restriction on searching in space, especially black hole theory. ‘ “
